Preface Preface
This collection brings together lessons that blend mathematics with waʻa (canoes) and wayfinding. The lessons range from elementary through high school and are designed primarily for teachers who wish to connect mathematics to Pacific knowledge and practices.
You can also freely view my textbook, Trigonometry Through Wayfinding and Navigation Across the Pacific, on its website:
https://www.kamuelayong.com/trigonometry/
The lessons are organized into four parts:
- Part I: Lower elementary
- Part II: Upper elementary and middle school
- Part III: High school
- Part IV: A five-part lesson on constructing a Star Compass on your campus, suitable for upper elementary through high school students
Not all lessons are fully written up yet, particularly for lower elementary and high school, but I wanted to make the materials available now while I continue to expand and refine them. The format varies depending on when I wrote each lesson, and I plan to polish and standardize them over time.
Thank you for your patience as this project grows. My hope is that these lessons spark curiosity, show the relevance of mathematics, and inspire new ways of teaching and learning through the lens of voyaging.
